Where There is No Doctor

Good health care is almost nonexistent, and basic hygiene is often not well understood or practiced in the rural villages of Ethiopia. Where There Is No Doctor-A Village Health Care Handbook, by David Werner, is a book that provides simple information on common diseases, and instruction regarding their prevention, i.e. the need for clean water, correct placement of latrines, and insect control measures. Other subjects include, but are not limited to: nutrition, pre-natal care and delivery, pediatric and family health care, and emergency first-aid. This book, with its extensive use of picture illustrations, is particularly useful for illiterate villagers who live far from professional medical centers.

Ezra Rural Ministry in America raises money to provide Ezra Rural Ministry Training Center with Where There Is No Doctor-A Village Health Care Handbook translated into the Amharic language. Director Dereje Shiferaw uses this handbook as a study tool to teach his students the basics of village health care. If it could, Ezra Rural Ministry would raise enough money to provide every student with their own personal copy, which they could then take back to their villages. The information in this book has saved lives.
